Travel

Information

  1. COVID/Mobility Pass information: As of 1 October in Chile, the use of face masks is not mandatory. Non-resident foreigners (tourists) will be able to enter Chile with the vaccination certificate issued by the country where they were vaccinated, which will be equivalent to the mobility pass, together with their identification document. If they are not vaccinated, they must present a negative PCR that does not exceed 48 hours from their departure to our country.
  2. Airport City Transfer: It is suggested to take only authorised transport, which can be hired inside the airport (after the customs area and before the entrance gates to the country). Apps such as Uber are not legal in Chile and we suggest not to use them at the airport. For economical options, you can use the Centropuerto bus service www.centropuerto.cl, whose final stop is at Los Héroes metro station (line 1) and costs $1,800 one way (approx. 2USD). Another option is to hire a transfer service from the airport to the hotel on the website www.transvip.cl. If you want individual service we suggest hiring official taxis.
  3. To move around the city: BIP Card (You can buy the card in all metro stations, it costs $1.550 (approx. 1.8 USD). Each ticket costs 800 (approx. 1 USD) and is valid for all metro lines and buses. To check the routes, you can check the Metro app, Red (buses) and Moovit. If you are going to use taxis you should check https://www.votchile.cl/ and only use authorised taxis.
  4. Exchange and currency: In Chile we use the Chilean Peso. Currently, 1USD corresponds to approximately 900 Chilean pesos. You should only exchange in authorized exchange houses. You can check the website www.afex.cl to find exchange houses near Casa Central.

General

Recommendations

  1. Do not drink water directly from the tap
  2. Do not change dollars on the street, only in Casas de Cambio. Maybe look for some addresses of exchange houses near the university.
  3. Do not eat in the street (except for carts with mote con huesillos).
  4. Try fish and seafood in established restaurants.
  5. Do not withdraw money from ATMs in the metro, or those that are very exposed. Prefer banks.
  6. Only buy in established shops to avoid scams.
  7. Use only authorised taxis

About

Climate

In Chile there are places that have not seen a drop of rain in decades, while there are others where the rain brings out the green in the millenial forests.

This diversity captivates and surprises its visitors. Because, as a consequence of its geography, Chile has all the climates of the planet and the four seasons are well differentiated. The warmest season is between October and April and the coldest, from May to September.

The temperature in Chile drops down as you travel south. In the north, the heat of the day remains during the day while the nights are quite cold. The central area has more of a Mediterranean climate and the south has lower temperatures and recurring rainfall throughout the year.

About

Currency

Since 1975, the Chilean currency has been the Peso, with coins equal to 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 pesos and bills of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos.

In the many cities of the country it is relatively easy to find ATMs that provide local currency. At the same time, most of the established stores allow paying with international bank cards.

Although some shops in Chile accept Dollars and Euros, it’s better to get Chilean Pesos always in official currency exchange offices as the exchange rate will be better.
